About my work

My cyanotypes are made using a multi-step photographic process. A solution of potassium ferricyanide and ferric ammonium citrate was mixed to create a photosensitive emulsion, which was applied by hand to watercolor paper and allowed to dry in darkness. The treated paper was exposed to ultraviolet light (sunlight) beneath an original photographic negative or object. The print was then rinsed in water to reveal a positive, monochromatic, cyan blue (Prussian blue) image. Digital manipulation of original photographs imparts depth, context, and texture into images along with engineered print processes and treatments with washes, watercolor tinting, gilding, inking, embroidery, collage, and toning.

I also create Lumens, Cyanolumens, Glass Cyanotypes and Lumen prints.

"The cyanotype process continues to allure me - the simplicity of sun exposures and soothing shades of blue, blending old-world craft with modern technology. It cannot be exactly controlled; no two pieces ever look alike. I am happy to be able to re-conceive and share photographs from my travels across the United States as well as silhouettes that show unfamiliar perspectives on everyday objects and miraculous creatures, plants, and other bits from nature."
